Keep Your Brackets On

Why?

Intact brackets and archwires will allow your orthodontic treatment to progress on schedule. Broken brackets, however, require a special appointment to repair them, and can delay your treatment.

How?

Modify some aspects of your diet and possibly some habits which you may be unaware of, such as biting on pens.

What?

Be aware of the foods that you eat. You can continue to enjoy most foods… as long as you make some changes to how you eat them. Hard foods like carrots, crusty bread, and apples must be cut into smaller pieces and chewed with the back teeth. If the front teeth are used, the food will slide up the front surfaces of the teeth and break off the front brackets. Sticky foods like jellybeans and toffee must be avoided. Crunching on very hard things like ice cubes should also be avoided. Enjoying sweets (including pop) occasionally is fine, as long as you brush your teeth afterwards so that the sugar does not sit on the teeth.

Be aware of any habits that might affect the brackets. Try to stop nail biting. Avoid chewing on pens or pencils at school when you are concentrating on writing your exam.

When?

Keep us informed if you have a loose bracket — let us know right away. Please keep in mind that if too many brackets are broken, there will be an extra charge to fix them. You have to be responsible for your own brackets.

We Are Here To Help You

We have compiled the above suggestions so that you will be able to reduce the risk of brackets breaking. Our goal is to provide you with the best orthodontic result in the shortest time possible.
